How to read this page

In Norway, PFAS-4 is not published. The pages show the sum of 20 PFAS (PFAS-20) against the EU limit of 100 ng/L; results below the laboratory's reporting limit are given with that limit ("<30 ng/L"). As soon as a source itemises the four EFSA compounds, the page switches to the PFAS-4 display with no other change.

Each municipality shows annual figures from Mattilsynet's register: for the largest active water supply system with analyses from the latest or the previous year, the year's median per parameter, the year's maximum alongside (and the minimum for pH); the other systems are listed with their residents. A value counts as a breach only when the waterworks reported a sample above the limit to the register; a maximum above the limit that the register did not count as a deviation is marked amber. PFAS is not yet published per system; the Sum-4 PFAS limit of 4 ng/L applies since 1 January 2026 and the first annual figures are due 15 February 2027.

Legal limits and dates in Norway

Norway's drikkevannsforskriften, vedlegg 1, sets "Sum 4 PFAS" (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS) at 0.004 µg/l, that is 4 ng/L, added by forskrift 2025-12-19-2728 and in force since 1 January 2026; waterworks report their annual figures by 15 February of the following year. The regulation contains no limit for the sum of 20 PFAS today. This site's 0.5 ng/L benchmark is stricter than the Norwegian limit.

Sources, regulators and licences

In Norway, Mattilsynet (the Norwegian Food Safety Authority) supervises the waterworks under the drikkevannsforskriften; the waterworks report their analyses yearly and Mattilsynet publishes them as open data (vannforsyningssystem_analyse) per water supply system. This page shows them per municipality.

Frequently asked questions

How much PFAS is in tap water in Norway?

This page summarises the official tap water results of 357 cities in Norway, published by Mattilsynet. No PFAS result, neither the sum of 20 PFAS (PFAS-20) nor the four EFSA compounds (PFAS-4), is published yet. The most recent result dates from 31 December 2025. None of the 357 cities has a published PFAS result yet. The EU limit for the sum of 20 PFAS is 100 ng/L. No PFAS-4 value that this site could compare with its 0.5 ng/L benchmark is published.

Which PFAS limits apply in Norway?

Norway's drikkevannsforskriften, vedlegg 1, sets "Sum 4 PFAS" (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS) at 0.004 µg/l, that is 4 ng/L, added by forskrift 2025-12-19-2728 and in force since 1 January 2026; waterworks report their annual figures by 15 February of the following year. The regulation contains no limit for the sum of 20 PFAS today. This site's 0.5 ng/L benchmark is stricter than the Norwegian limit.

Is tap water in Norway safe to drink?

In Norway, Mattilsynet (the Norwegian Food Safety Authority) supervises the waterworks under the drikkevannsforskriften; the waterworks report their analyses yearly and Mattilsynet publishes them as open data (vannforsyningssystem_analyse) per water supply system. This page shows them per municipality. Against the EU limit of 100 ng/L for the sum of 20 PFAS, no covered city is non-compliant. No PFAS-4 value is published in Norway, so a comparison with Sweden's 4 ng/L limit or this site's 0.5 ng/L benchmark is not possible. What a result means for you is explained on your city's page.

Where does this data come from?

All values come from official publications: Mattilsynet, Vannverk (vannforsyningssystem_analyse). Last retrieved on 28 September 2026; the site refreshes the data weekly, and the latest result date on each city page is authoritative.

How do I cite these figures?

Name the city, the sample date shown on the page, the source and the page URL. The "Source and citation" block below and on every city page contains a ready-made citation sentence; each source's licence is listed next to it.
